Psychoanalysis and Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy

Psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy both focus on increasing a person’s awareness and understanding of their unconscious mind, and the ways in which it influences thoughts, feelings and behaviors. Psychoanalysis is more intensive in several ways, including the frequency of sessions and the use of the analytic couch, which facilitates a person’s ability to free associate—to let their mind wander and freely say whatever comes to mind.

As for all psychoanalysts, part of my psychoanalytic training involved being in psychoanalysis multiple times a week, for a number of years. This has helped me to understand myself, listen and comment on my patients’ thoughts and feelings with a humble awareness of the complicated, painful aspects of our human nature. And, a significant part of our work is to understand how past patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving appear and are worked through within the therapeutic relationship.

Marital / Family Therapy

Family and marital therapy focus on improving the relationships within a family or between partners. Couples often seek help when they feel “stuck” in repeated patterns of disengagement or conflict. This type of therapy can help resolve conflicts, improve communication, and strengthen the emotional bonds. It is particularly beneficial for addressing issues such as marital or parental conflict, significant life transitions affecting the family unit, or behavioral problems in children and adolescents.
